WIMDI Speaker Series – Dating for Opinionated Women

Thursday, February 8, 5:30pm | Unbounce

Welcome to Talk 2 of 12 – Dating for Opinionated Women

Happy Valentine’s Day, WIMDI ladies! Like last year, this February, we’re turning our attention to the subject of romance. We’re all about talks that supercharge your career, and, even though this month’s topic is about hugs and smooches, it’s no exception to that rule.

The partner you choose can have a huge effect on your career and ambition, from how much work travel you can do without tanking your love life to who takes primary responsibility for the kids. Various studies point to the influence our significant others have on the many facets of our careers, but finding the right match isn’t always simple as an ambitious and successful woman. We’ve come a long way in terms of gender equality in our personal lives, but several preferences and relationship norms are firmly entrenched in our culture.

This talk will focus on the complexities of dating, mating, and matching, for successful women in a world of fragile male egos. We’ll cover:

  • The education gap between men and women
  • How men respond to dating intelligent and ambitious women
  • How women deal with the fragile male ego
  • What do we do about all this?

The goal of this talk is to explain why you, an amazing, accomplished, and beautiful person are getting ghosted, and what to do about it.

This workshop is facilitated by Dr. Marina Adshade, a lecturer at UBC’s Vancouver School of Economics.

Marina has spent the last ten years teaching and researching economics as it relates to sex, love, and gender. She holds appointments at the Vancouver School of Economics and the Simon Fraser School of Public Policy and is the author of Dollars and Sex: The Economics of Sex and Love. She is a regular contributor to the Globe and Mail and Time Magazine and has written about sex and love for the Wall Street Journal, the Sunday Times (UK), the Daily Mail (UK), Psychology Today, and Buzzfeed.

In addition to all that professional stuff that makes her sound impressive, she’s also a genuinely hilarious and smart lady. Sorry for being a huge fangirl, but I can’t wait for y’all to fall in love with her like I have.

Doors open at 5:30 for mingling and socializing. The official start time is 6pm, with additional networking time to follow.

Women in Male Dominated Industries Cafe Night

Thursday, February 22, 5:30pm | JJ Bean on Alberni

Join us at JJ Bean on Alberni for a night of networking, chit-chat, and strategy sharing between women in male-dominated industries.

Here’s the plan:

  1. Meet at JJ Bean on Alberni.
  2. Order delicious vanilla lattes, fancy rooibos tea, very berry muffins, etc.
  3. Meet some cool women and chat about our work lives.
  4. Exchange cards, phone numbers, facepages, myfriend accounts, tweetster, instapics, snaptexts, or whatever it is that the kids are using these days to stay in touch.
  5. Stay in touch! Or….failing that, we’ll do it all again in four weeks, so don’t worry, we’ve got your back.

Hope to see you there!
